Trouble at the Tomb?
Posted by GeekWoman
It is up to Lara Croft to solve her most difficult mission yet. Save Eidos.
Reports are circulating that UK publisher Eidos of Tomb Raider fame and
other high profile gaming brands has been struggling of late. Plagued with
disappointing sales the company could be sold within the next week. It
seems like Eidos, despite of it's success with the Lara Croft franchise,
goes from feast to famine with one bad choice to the next on the business
front in a deal where it is planned to revitalize the firm. They were once
one of the industry's most respected and successful publishers. The rumor
is that Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., a media giant with numerous global
interests, including Sky TV, Fox and The Sun newspaper might be purchasing
it. Mergers and acquisitions seldom turn out as promised. Beware Eidos of
what looks fair as foul.
Eidos has been vocal in the desire to merge or sell to another firm. If
this comes true then the sale might be the best possible scenario for
Eidos. An insider reports that they risked being stripped of valuable IPs
and developers, then disbanded, if a rival publisher took over. "Everyone
within Eidos knows that when it gets sold, it's going to be sold as a
group with a new flag on it," the insider reassured. "It's not going to be
broken up in the same way Criterion was." A reported freeze on hiring
points to the imminent sale. Word is that development teams have been told
to muster presentations on their projects for the new owners. I would hate
to see this one laid to rest for good. Do I smell another Tomb Raider game
or movie on the horizon? Tomb Raider like many games originated on the Mac
and PC. In it's day Tomb was the Great Mother of all games. It was the
first to do many things and pioneered a female gaming character as well as
the action strategy genre.
